Kanchanaburi is a town in the west of Thailand and the capital of Kanchanaburi province. It is approximately 130 km or about 3 hours drive to the west of Bangkok and is the third largest province in Thailand. Kanchanaburi is located where the Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi rivers merge into the Mae Klong river, where in 1942, under Japanese control, the world famous Bridge over the River Kwai was built by prisoners of war. Immortalized by the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, the bridge still stands and is a major tourist attraction. The city is also home to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. Kanchanaburi is an extremely popular tourist destination, not only for foreigners but also attracting Thais from other provinces at the weekends and on public holidays. The region has so much to offer such as waterfalls, mountains, fishing, boating, trekking, cave exploration to name a few, and it’s stunning natural beauty, caves, spectacular waterfalls and parks can also be enjoyed on elephant treks. The combination of all of the above have resulted in Kanchanaburi becoming one of Thailands major tourist attractions. Not much was recorded about Kanchanaburi province before King Rama I, but some historians believe that it was of great strategic importance during the Ayutthaya period.

Stunning Waterfalls And Parks In Kanchanaburi
Although Kanchanaburi doesn’t really have much in the way of department stores, there are shopping places that exist such as the night market located near Kanchanaburi railway Station that sells the likes of clothes, shoes, bags, souvenirs, DVDs and CDs etc, while general day to day stuff like food, toiletries etc can be bought almost anywhere.

River Kwai As Seen From The Felix River Kwai Resort
With its serene river, lush surroundings and stunning temples, the rustic charm of Kanchanaburi has been steadily attracting visitors for many years and will undoubtably continue to do so for many more to come.

The Famous Bridge Over The River Kwai
When visiting Kanchanaburi, there are several options to choose from as far as hotels go. You can stay somewhere plush like The Felix River Kwai which is a firm favorite of ours when visiting the area. It has rooms with great river views and is very quiet and great for relaxing after the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. You can actually whistle for a long-tail river boat from the riverside much as you would for a taxi in any town which is really novel. There are also many cheaper hotels like the River Kwai Hotel and backpacker lodges and guesthouses such as the Noble Night as well as new concepts such as the Boutique Raft Resort at Saiyoke and Pung Waan Kwai where you can actually stay on the river on rafts.
