Bangkok
Bangkok is one of the most colorful and seductive cities in South east Asia. It has something for everyone, whatever age or budget. There is so much to see and do that it can be hard to know where to start! There are dazzling temples and the hotels of every quality and size, lively markets, shiny palaces, huge shopping malls, the famous nightlife and many other things in between. Bangkok’s ancient treasures that made it famous still survive today in the temples, palaces and museums and they reveal the city’s spiritual side. In contrast, funky neon signs in streets, alleys and arcades welcome visitors to pumping trendy clubs, uber hip bars and even theaters to take in and explore. If it is your first time in Thailand then you should know that the Best Hotels In Bangkok can probably be found between Riverside, Siam square and Sukhumvit ( the Bangkok Oriental being one such example) although there are exceptions. There are a plethora of the best hotels in Bangkok to choose from as you would expect from a city of it’s stature, and choosing the best hotel in Bangkok could be a daunting task without our help! We have our own ideas about who the best hotel Bangkok is through personal experience and others too, however the list is ever growing and choosing one is getting harder all the time. Overall we prefer the Oriental as the location (by the Chao Phraya riverside) , quality of service(5 star hotel service at it’s best), attention to detail and the overall longevity of it’s good name are tough to beat, we along with many others worldwide believe it to be the best hotel Bangkok offers although everyone is entitled to their own opinion! Anywhere that waits for you as you arrive and knows your name not just one person but by all members of staff is doing their job right wouldn’t you say? However as we said before your idea of the best hotel Bangkok may be slightly different, perhaps you prefer your Bangkok hotel to be slightly more modern so perhaps a newer development such as The Millenium Hilton (also riverside) might be more to your tastes. Whatever you like you can search for your best hotel Bangkok by clicking on the link HERE. What to do on your holidays to Bangkok
Bangkok’s world class shopping malls such as the fantastic Siam (where some of the Best hotels in Bangkok can be found) and the super Pratunam and outdoor markets like Chatuchak are famous all the world over and travelers and locals alike flock to them. With some of the finest shopping facilities in the whole of south east Asia, shopping is definitely something that is high up on many peoples lists of what to do when they get to Bangkok. Some of the shops have amazing discounts, as much as 75-80 % off the rrp at times. High quality, designer goods can be bought in the major shopping centers. Copied goods can be found in many of the street stalls on Sukhumvit road, or at the market in Patpong, although the government has clamped down on counterfeiting so these things are harder to find these days. National Geographic have an awesome Bangkok photo gallery which has many of Bangkok’s famous attractions included. You can view these fantastic pictures HERE.
Must do things whilst in Bangkok
Go to the floating market The awesome spectacle of the floating market is less than 100 Km’s from Bangkok. There are plenty of day tours operating or you can catch a bus from the south bus terminal. Every day, hundreds of boats selling just about everything imaginable flood the market area from early in the morning until around lunchtime. You can travel around in a boat and see what Thai village life is like. Many tourists visit the spectacle so getting there early is always a good idea before the crowds get too much.
Wat Pho Next to the Grand Palace is Wat Pho.It is found along Thai Wang Road and houses the world famous gold reclining Buddha which is 46 meters (or 150 feet!) long and 15 meters(or 49 feet!) high. Admission is very cheap less than $1 and it’s open from 9 am to 5 pm. I highly recommend getting a Thai Massage whilst there as it is very cheap, and the number one place in the world where people go to train in this ancient art. Take an hour extra and treat yourself! You can find out more about Thai Massage HERE. Click on the image below to take you to the Wat Po massage school website.
Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) Wat Arun is beside the Chao Phraya river. You can take a boat from the Pier at Tha Tien which isn’t far from Wat Po. The temple is best known for it’s 79 m high porcelain covered Pagoda which sparkles magnificently in the sunlight.
Muay Thai (Thai kick Boxing) Kick Boxing or Muay Thai has become very well known around the world. The two main stadiums where you can watch a fight are Ratchadamnoen Stadium on Ratchadamnoen Nok Road and Lumpini Stadium on Rama IV Road. You might want to ask the hotel where you are staying for tips on which are the best seats and even to get tickets for you. Click on the image below to take you to the Lumpini Stadium website.
Grand Palace No trip to Bangkok would be complete without a trip to see the architectural achievement that is the Grand Palace which also houses the famous Emerald Buddha, which is held in high esteem throughout Thailand. It is a good idea to go early in the morning to avoid all the crowds.Although it will still be busy if you get there around 9 or 10 am it won’t be quite so crowded. Don’t wear shorts to the palace, and if you are a female it is best that you don’t wear sandals or a skirt and it is a good idea that you wear a long-sleeved blouse or something similar. You will need to keep at least half a day or more free to see everything and you will definitely need your camera and perhaps an extra memory card or roll of film!
To get there, you can either take a taxi, tuk-tuk or the Sky train to the National Stadium stop and then another taxi from there. On the way back we suggest that you take one of the many taxi boats for something different. The Grand Palace officially opens at 8.30 am and closes at around 3.30. Admission fees include a ticket to the Vimanmek Royal mansion. It is a good idea to rent a Personal Audio Guide that will only costs a few baht for two hours, and comes in English, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and German. Cinemas Thailand has been internationally recognized as having some of the highest quality cinemas in the world. Not only are they super modern, but most of the high-end cinemas even have VIP or First Class screens. These cinemas within cinemas, can be likened to the Executive Floor in a five-star hotel in that they often have a lounge with complimentary snacks and drinks, and only have seating for up to 40 people in a regular sized movie theater. The seats are just like you would find in first class or Business on a good quality airline. They recline, and some come complete with blanket and pillow and even have a waiter service! Of course they do cost more than the regular cinemas, but are still extremely good value for money and something not to miss! While these cinemas can be found all over Bangkok, we recommend the Nokia VIP cinema at the Siam Paragon. With different VIP theaters, this section of a very large cinema complex plays the movies in such refinement and comfort you may want to watch more than one movie!
